ABSTRACT

The ever-growing interest in the English Premier League (EPL) against the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), among lovers of football, in Nigeria is undisputable. Some sports commentators and administrators in Nigeria have attributed this fact to the kind of coverage given to it by the media in Nigeria. That is to say, the media in Nigeria give more coverage to EPL matches than NPL matches in terms of quantity and quality. Also, some still believe that the ever-growing popularity of EPL in Nigeria lies in the sophisticated nature and quality of the game. Thus, this study was a comparative study of Nigeria newspaper coverage of EPL and NPL to ascertain the authenticity of the first argument. A content analytical approach was adopted for the study to answer the five research questions raised in the work. A sample size of 42 newspapers derived from a population of 915 newspapers using the constructed week sampling method of Stemple (1952) was also used for this study. Again, the study was limited to 2011/2012 season (i.e. between Aug.1, 2011 to May 31, 2012) and the sports section of the selected three national dailies (The Guardian, The Punch and Vanguard newspapers). Findings revealed that the studied newspapers under represent NPL in terms of quality and quantity. It was also revealed from the study that these newspapers adopted the master-apprentice frame in coverage of both leagues. Their coverage of EPL events reflected a game with excellent finesse expected from a master whereas, the representation of NPL events reflected a game still trying to gain its ground in the world of professional football league. Therefore, the study recommends that the government of Nigeria should privatize NPL to allow successful business men who have made it in the business world to bring their expertise in the game so that the game will grow. This in return, will attract sponsors and the media to patronize the game consistently and in a more robust way.
